“I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. The riches of music are so excellent and so precious that words fail me whenever I attempt to discuss and describe them. …In summa, next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.”
Martin Luther – 1538
At Grace Church of the Islands, music is an essential element of our worship. Throughout scripture, we are instructed to sing praises, songs, hymns and spiritual songs. Each week as we gather for corporate worship, our services are filled with musical offerings of praise, joyful responses, and reverent, prayerful hymns. Our worship services also include instrumental music during the prelude, offertory, and postlude, offering opportunity for worshippers to meditate and pray. Our aim is to honor God and His Word, and prepare our hearts to receive it. We consider it an awesome privelege to participate in the eternal, perpetual worship of God in heaven.
The Music Ministry trains our members and children in understanding and appreciation of hymns and sacred music for the purpose of participation and leadership in worship. Listed below are the programs currently in operation at our church. Our goal is to expand our musical opportunities as our membership grows.
Adult Choir – The adult choir leads in our Sunday morning service by strengthening congregational singing and sometimes offering special anthem
Adult choir practice is on Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:00.
Children’s Choir – We have an ongoing children’s choir for ages 4 years through 6th grade to teach hymns and carefully selected Biblical songs, including songs to teach the Catechism. We teach singing and history of hymns, learn about hymn writers and composers, and learn basic music notation. We also learn how to us the hymnal for the purpose of helping the children know and appreciate music and hymns and to encourage congregational singing. The children occasionally participate in the worship services as well.
Children’s choir meets on Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:00.
Special Ensembles and Instruments – We sometimes organize special ensembles, such as our ladies trio, to help lead in the worship services. We encourage all those who play instruments to participate with us in the music program. We also engage our youth to play hand chimes for some special services.
